Well, Lin Hao-zhou is a Chinese from China, but Hao-chou Lin came from Taiwan.
Our classmate Dong-ping Liao has passed away.  He got brain tumor.  I just derived from the way he contacted me in the weekend for the relation between tumor and cell phone since everytime he called me in the weekend, he used a cell phone, and we talked usually over two hours.  I close my eye, and his image is in my mind.  We met many times particularly in the airport of SFO when he came back to the States from Taiwan, and I went to the airport to meet him before his transfer to the southeast.
We will see the statistics after 10 years; in the meanwhile, I use my cell phone less than 20 minutes per month.

WELL; Experts Revive Debate Over Cellphones and Cancer

By TARA PARKER-POPE
What do brain surgeons know about cellphone safety that the rest of us don't?

Last week, three prominent neurosurgeons told the CNN interviewer Larry King that they did not hold cellphones next to their ears. ''I think the safe practice,'' said Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, ''is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain.''

Dr. Vini Khurana, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the Australian National University who is an outspoken critic of cellphones, said: ''I use it on the speaker-phone mode. I do not hold it to my ear.'' And CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital, said that like Dr. Black he used an earpiece.

Along with Senator Edward M. Kennedy's recent diagnosis of a glioma, a type of tumor that critics have long associated with cellphone use, the doctors' remarks have helped reignite a long-simmering debate about cellphones and cancer.

That supposed link has been largely dismissed by many experts, including the American Cancer Society. The theory that cellphones cause brain tumors ''defies credulity,'' said Dr. Eugene Flamm, chairman of neurosurgery at Montefiore Medical Center.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, three large epidemiology studies since 2000 have shown no harmful effects. CTIA -- the Wireless Association, the leading industry trade group, said in a statement, ''The overwhelming majority of studies that have been published in scientific journals around the globe show that wireless phones do not pose a health risk.''

The F.D.A. notes, however, that the average period of phone use in the studies it cites was about three years, so the research doesn't answer questions about long-term exposures. Critics say many studies are flawed for that reason, and also because they do not distinguish between casual and heavy use.

Cellphones emit non-ionizing radiation, waves of energy that are too weak to break chemical bonds or to set off the DNA damage known to cause cancer. There is no known biological mechanism to explain how non-ionizing radiation might lead to cancer.

But researchers who have raised concerns say that just because science can't explain the mechanism doesn't mean one doesn't exist. Concerns have focused on the heat generated by cellphones and the fact that the radio frequencies are absorbed mostly by the head and neck. In recent studies that suggest a risk, the tumors tend to occur on the same side of the head where the patient typically holds the phone.

Like most research on the subject, the studies are observational, showing only an association between cellphone use and cancer, not a causal relationship. The most important of these studies is called Interphone, a vast research effort in 13 countries, including Canada, Israel and several in Europe.

Some of the research suggests a link between cellphone use and three types of tumors: glioma; cancer of the parotid, a salivary gland near the ear; and acoustic neuroma, a tumor that essentially occurs where the ear meets the brain. All these cancers are rare, so even if cellphone use does increase risk, the risk is still very low.

Last year, The American Journal of Epidemiology published data from Israel finding a 58 percent higher risk of parotid gland tumors among heavy cellphone users. Also last year, a Swedish analysis of 16 studies in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed a doubling of risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma after 10 years of heavy cellphone use.

''What we're seeing is suggestions in epidemiological studies that have looked at people using phones for 10 or more years,'' says Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, an industry publication that tracks the research. ''There are some very disconcerting findings that suggest a problem, although it's much too early to reach a conclusive view.''

Some doctors say the real concern is not older cellphone users, who began using phones as adults, but children who are beginning to use phones today and face a lifetime of exposure.

''More and more kids are using cellphones,'' said Dr. Paul J. Rosch, clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry at New York Medical College. ''They may be much more affected. Their brains are growing rapidly, and their skulls are thinner.''

For people who are concerned about any possible risk, a simple solution is to use a headset. Of course, that option isn't always convenient, and some critics have raised worries about wireless devices like the Bluetooth that essentially place a transmitter in the ear.

The fear is that even if the individual risk of using a cellphone is low, with three billion users worldwide, even a minuscule risk would translate into a major public health concern.

''We cannot say with any certainty that cellphones are either safe or not safe,'' Dr. Black said on CNN. ''My concern is that with the widespread use of cellphones, the worst scenario would be that we get the definitive study 10 years from now, and we find out there is a correlation.''

Dear classmates,

You must have heard that a major (7.9 scale) earthquake struck Sichuan Province in China. By the latest account, over 25,000 people are perished and tens and thousands more people are still buried under the rubbles. The devastation is immeasurable. Chinese government is doing her best to rescue and recover, however, the surviving victims are in urgent need of help. As oversea Chinese, we must do our part to assist the victims.

My wife's charity organization, Tzu Chi Foundation (慈濟) already sent over 100 tons of supplies to the earthquake victims. Beginning May 17, Tzu Chi Foundation starts a donation drive all over the US.  The attached two fliers, one in Chinese and one in English, contain information on how to make a donation through Tzu Chi Foundation. Because Tzu Chi Foundation is an IRS-registered 503(c)(3) tax exempt charity organization, your donation is fully tax deductible. Furthermore, your donation is used to help the victim without overhead charges. The overhead is being covered by a separate set of donations. Please visit http://www.us.tzuchi.org/usa/home.nsf/homeC/index for details and daily updates.

Other than Tzu Chi Foundation, you also may send a check to World Journal, 141-07 20 Ave. Whitestone, NY 11357. The check should be payable to: World Journal LLC For Sichuan Earthquake Relief.

Subject: My father
Dear classmates,
I am very sorry to inform you that my father passed away at home in Pasadena, California December 17, 2007 at 9:00 pm. He was 92 years old.
With the help of my mother's church, we had a very memorable memorial service attended by my family, my two sisters and their families, my mother's church senior members, and the Southern California Tzu Chi volunteers. My father was finally able to rest in peace.
Even though, we know the end eventually will come. When it comes, it still hits us very hard. We also did not expect it came so quickly. When I left my father on December 5, I was fully expecting to see him again during my scheduled Christmas visit but it was not meant to be.
I have been traveling back and forth to visit and to try to care for my father since last July. It has been the longest time I spent time with my father since I moved to the US. I wish I would have spent more time with my father. Please spend time with your parents as much as you are able to and don't wait a minute longer.
I will bring my father's ashes back to Taiwan for storage in a columbarium in Taipei on January 17, 2008.
Take care,
Yen

HY

(Excellent writing. I felt just like the article said. We are the generation that feels responsible for our parents and our children but never requests anything in return. We are lucky and unlucky depending on how you look at it. Most time I felt that I am lucky except that I felt there is no place I can call my homeland. Most of all I wish that Taiwan would be my homeland instead of calling me " 外省人 ")

(Nei-Di-Ren)

毛澤東和其信徒搞出來的「文化大革命」幾乎革掉了中國的命;

李登輝一個沒有誠信又搞「黑金」的政客,又以國民黨黨主席的身份居然把自己的黨搞垮;

Hi, Happy Holiday!  Attach is Lee’s Season’s greeting, hope to hear from you soon!    Chi-Gen  and Chuching

(Statue of Christ the Redeemer) 及著名的CopacabanaBeach.
2007  (408)-252-8281  chigen.lee@gmail.com ; CLee@valleywater.org

The attachment------------

Dear classmates, Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you!

It’s the end of the year and the Christmas season again. Remember those “good old days” when we were young and studied hard (except me) seemed just yesterday. Yes, we may say “How time flies”. None of us are physically young anymore (spiritually should still be!). We are at age of needing routine physical examinations. Please don’t ignore that.   Generally speaking, we should have our blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood glucose (sugar) and body weight checked routinely. These are the essential items only. Other important tests may extend to kidney function, liver function, even colonoscopy (fiber optic scoping for colon to detect colon condition includes early colon cancer), exercise stress test (to see how much stress your heart can endure during the hard exercise) and cardiac catheter (looking for any heart artery blockages if indicated).    Overall, prevention is more important that treatment of illness. I certainly wish all of you are healthy and young forever and your doctor will find you all right.   I remember in the past two years our classmates Yen Li, Haochou Lin etc. have given us some important healthy exercises and food guidelines and instructions. Those are very good to our health. We should pay attention to that and most of all, to do it.    In this Christmas season I also have very important messages to share with you. We all know that Christmas is to celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth. He is the one that God sent to this long-suffered world to bring us back to our Creator, our heavenly Father. We are lost children of God. Jesus came and told us that we may return to our true original status. That means we are from heaven and when we are done with this world we should return to Him and to enjoy eternal life with our Creator. Jesus said that whoever believed in Him and accepted Him as his savior would be saved and would become God’s children. How wonderful it is. We are created by God. We of course should go back to Him and not to go astray anymore.    My dear classmates, I am here to appeal to you, (as I have been a medical doctor for 15 years now), please pay attention to your physical health and to your spiritual well beings. Trust me; I have personal experience on this faith. Trust in Jesus. He saves. He is full of love. As soon as you ask Him to come into your heart he will be there to help you. You will definitely enjoy returning to God’s family again. What you need to do is just to open your heart and accept him as your personal savior. You may also read the Bible beginning from the New Testament. You will find all what I said here.    God created us. We belong to him. We are not the product of random, molecule collisions. Evolution theory can not even stand the “The Second Law of Thermal Dynamics” which gives us a very clear idea that chaos will never produce an intellectual human being. You are all smart people. Please think it over. Your body structure is so sophisticate (I learned it from medical school) that it’s impossible to be randomly existing. It’s far beyond just an “Intellectual Designed”. We are created by God the creator of the universe!  Thank you very much. May God bless you all from now on till forever!   Your humble classmate, Kang, Tsang-Hai (Joseph)  12/23/07

P.S. If you have anything to discuss please feel free to call me at 610 406-9387 (I live in Pennsylvania) or just to E-mail me at this E-mail address: jtk201@yahoo.com

Subject: Happy New Year
Dear family and friend,
We wish you a very happy, healthy, and prosperous year 2008!
 Yen & Lieping

Dear family and friends,     We enjoyed two trips this year. First, we went on a cruise trip to Panama Canal in late January. The trip was planed as a family reunion to celebrate my parent’s sixty-third anniversary and the Chinese New Year. At the last minute, my parents were unable to go. We took a lot of pictures to share with them. We saw the canal gate operation and the train tug the ship through the three gates of the canal. It was an amazing sight. On the way, the ship stopped at ports in Jamaica, Mexico, the Grand Cayman Island, and Costa Rica. We learned several different cultures and enjoyed some amazing sights. The cruise trip was sure to be memorable for a long time to come.       The second trip was to tour China for 12 days in June. To ensure that both Hoyee and Hojun understood tour guide’s introduction, we joined an English-speaking tour originated in the US. The tour consisted of five other families with children whose Chinese were as good as Hoyee and Hojun’s. We stopped at Suzhou, Hanzhou, Beijing, Xian, Guilin, and Shanghai (in that order) and stayed in five star hotels in very city. The tour included all three meals and several shows. We visited a famous garden in Suzhou and a silk production factory; the famous West Lake and a Lungjin (Dragon Well) tea farm and its green tea production factory in Hanzhou; the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Haven, Tiananmen Square, and the Summer Palace in Beijing; the famous Terra Cotta worrier museum in Xian; the beautiful Li River and the elephant trunk hill in Guilin; the art museum and the television tower in Shanghai. We rode the bullet train from downtown Shanghai to the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. It was very fast and quiet. We were impressed. Because I am a vegetarian, I ate stir fried lily petal and celery and nothing else (other than rice of course) for 24 times. I wonder why didn’t they have any tofu dishes for me. I finally got sick and tired of the lily petal and celery dish. The solution was to load up at breakfast since it was buffet style.              The China trip was very educational for both Hoyee and Hojun. They learned the history of China and many discoveries made by ancient Chinese. They also learned to speak Chinese to the extent that they could carry a simple conversation in Chinese. You may have heard that you must bargain when you make any purchase in China, especially at the tourist attractions. If you could speak Chinese, you were at an advantage in terms of bargaining because most vendors could speak only Chinese. Hojun was so confident with his Chinese capability that he wanted to bargain with the local vendors on his own without our help. He purchased souvenirs and designer dress shirt (knock-offs of course). He thought he got really good deals because they were cheaper than what he could get in the US when the shirt was on sale. The on sale items in the US usually were made in China anyway. He was happy with the deals he got and was sorry he did not purchase more shirts.     Hoyee was taking courses at the University of Maryland University College. Because it was what he wanted to do, he was able to pull some A’s and B’s. He was happy and we were proud of him.     Hojun finished his first two years of medical training consisted of courses, clinical rotations, and laboratory rotations. He has decided his research advisor. He is about to start his thesis research. He will take his qualifying exam next May. How long he has to stay in medical school depends on how fast he can finish his research project, usually 3-4 years.     Lieping suffered from frozen shoulder. She is seeing physical therapist and is doing joint exercises. She is feeling better. Yen suffered an episode of frozen shoulder about a year and half ago. He cured himself by doing joint exercises. If you are interested in learning how do I do my joint exercises and cured my frozen shoulder, please drop me a line.

We wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.       Sincerely,          Yen, Lieping, Hoyee, & Hojun      December 2007      (The background is a picture taken in Costa Rica.)

Dear Yola and All:

I just got back from Raleigh last night.
After I arrived Raleigh in the afternoon of last Saturday, I called Mrs. Tong,
knew their funeral service arrangement and found out that Tong's body was going
to be cremated on the next day at 9:30 am.
The next morning, I went to the funeral home, met her family members and
friends, talked to Mrs. Tong and told her that I am here to represent the NTNU
'58 Chemistry class to pay our last respect to Tong Hua-Su.  Tong Hua-Su looked
very peaceful to me.    --------Lie-Ping

Hua-Su was my close friend. I have talked to him from time to time since he got sick a year ago. He was making a good recovery. I was deeply sad when Rosa told me the news last week. I felt slightly better now because one of us was there for his last moment. Thanks again.   ------Tang, Robert H

Hi Lie-Ping,

Do you have time to attend the funeral service at 2:00 pm? The viewing time is at 1:00 pm.
If you can, that would be very good. Would you please represent our class and express our condolences in person.
I think you can contact Mrs. Tong at 919-851-4975 (home).
I ordered a big flower arrangement "Spray" with writing "with deepest sympathy, from National Taiwan Normal University, The Chemistry Class of 1968", $224.12. It will be delivered to the funeral service by 10:00 am on Saturday.   -----Yola

I am very sorry to hear this sad news.
Thanks to Yola to take action for us.

We really need to take care of ourselves particularly watching what we eat and do some exercise.  Practice taichi for our internal organs and tennis for our heart, orr swim to take care of everything.  But most important is to watch our input.  Hua-sou is at most 60 years old, and he used to be slim.  It is sad.
